Who We Are

Who Manufactures Steam Generators — and What We Do

Sauna Dekor is a steam room and hammam manufacturer and a turnkey wet-area contractor. We have manufactured in Istanbul since 1987 — this is our 40th year — and have delivered work in more than 35 countries, with Gulf projects coordinated from our Dubai office and produced in our Istanbul facility.

We do not build the steam generator itself, and we do not present another company’s equipment as ours. The commercial generators we install are built by a small group of European manufacturers — Condair in Switzerland and EOS in Germany are the two we specify most often. What Sauna Dekor contributes is the part that decides whether the installation works: sizing it against the real room, integrating it with the steam room or hammam we build, and standing behind the commissioned result. Our own certification is TS EN ISO 9001:2015 quality management, covering sauna and spa product manufacturing and after-sales service. The equipment we install carries CE, VDE and comparable marking from its own manufacturers — those are their certificates, supplied with the unit, not ours.

Sizing

Size in Kilograms of Steam per Hour First. Kilowatts Follow.

A steam generator is selected on steam output, measured in kilograms per hour. The electrical load in kilowatts is a consequence of that choice, set by the manufacturer. Sizing on volume alone is the most common error we correct on other people’s drawings, because the wall finish changes the answer more than the volume does: a cold marble surface condenses steam continuously, an insulated acrylic panel barely does.

Add to the figure above for a full-glass door, a glazed facade, an uninsulated external wall, a high ceiling or an extraction rate above the design value. Worked example: a 12 m³ acrylic cabin lands near 7 kg/h; the same 12 m³ as a marble hammam lands near 14 kg/h — twice the generator, on identical volume. This is why we ask for the finishes schedule before quoting, not just the room size.

Manufacturers publish their ranges in fixed steps, so the calculated demand is rounded up to the next available model — never down. On the Condair Sigma range the published series is 4, 5, 8, 15, 23, 32, 45 and 65 kg/h, with nominal power of 3.1, 3.8, 6.0, 11.3, 17.3, 24.0, 33.8 and 48.8 kW respectively. On the Condair Omega range the series is 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 and 20 kg/h, with 6.5 kW at 8 kg/h, 9.5 kW at 12, 12.5 kW at 16 and 15.5 kW at 20. Those loads belong on the electrical schedule at design stage, on a dedicated circuit.

Selection

Nine Checks Before the Generator Is Ordered

These are the questions we work through with the consultant, the MEP engineer and the operator on every project. Each one has sent a job back to the drawing board somewhere; together they are the difference between a room that holds temperature on opening night and one that does not.

  1. Output and connected load

    Kilograms per hour from the volume and the finish, then the manufacturer’s kilowatt figure for that model — allocated on the electrical schedule, not found later. Our commercial specification notes cover the same discipline on the dry side.

  2. Feedwater quality and hardness

    Measured on the project, not assumed. Hardness decides the scale rate, the service interval and, on some units, whether the generator will run at all. We do not publish a hardness figure for a site we have not measured.

  3. Scale management and automatic flush

    How the unit drains and flushes itself between services, whether an anti-scale option is specified, where the hot flush water goes and whether that drain is rated for it.

  4. Electrical supply and phase

    Single or three phase, dedicated circuit, local isolator, and the control voltage the unit expects — 230 V on the Condair Sigma range, for example. Confirmed against the panel schedule before order.

  5. Position and service access

    Dry, ventilated, drained plant space with clearance to withdraw the cylinder, and a service hatch agreed with the architect while it can still be cut. Weight matters here too: the larger Sigma bodies are around 65 kg, an Omega around 19.6 kg.

  6. Steam line length, fall and insulation

    Shortest practical run, insulated full length, continuous fall so condensate returns instead of pooling, wide-radius bends, and no low points. Length limits come from the installation instructions for that model.

  7. Steam head position and scald safety

    Low level, away from the seating line and from the point where a bather steps in, with the manufacturer’s minimum clearance to the bench respected. This is decided with the room layout, not after tiling.

  8. Control panel and integration

    Whether the operator wants a standalone panel or Modbus, KNX and BMS integration — and where the panel is mounted. A panel rated IP20 belongs outside the wet room with only its probe inside; we have seen that one specified the wrong way round more than once.

  9. Maintenance interval and consumables

    Cylinder or elements, fill and drain valves, level sensor and seals — what they cost in downtime, who holds them, and how quickly they reach the site. Covered under our after-sales service.

Technology

Electrode Cylinder or Resistance Element — the Water Decides

There are two ways a commercial steam generator boils water, and the choice is not a preference. It is dictated by what comes out of the pipe on your site.

Type 1 · Electrode cylinder

Runs on ordinary mains water

Current passes through the water between electrodes, so the water’s own mineral content does the work. The Condair Sigma range is built this way and is designed for tap water, with an anti-scale option and a cylinder that is treated as a consumable. The trap: feed it softened, demineralised or reverse-osmosis water and it will not draw current and will not make steam. If the building has a central softener, this has to be raised before the order goes in, not at commissioning.

Type 2 · Resistance element

Indifferent to conductivity

A heating element boils the water directly, so treated water is not a problem and can even be an advantage for scale. The element and the tank still need descaling on hard supply, and the flush regime still has to be designed. This is the route where softened water is unavoidable, or where the operator wants the lowest possible scale maintenance and will treat the feed to get it.

Manufacturer detail worth knowing at design stage: the Condair Omega range reaches steam in under four minutes and holds a keep-warm state, carries a 4.3-inch touchscreen with an integrated spa control for lighting, fragrance, fan, bench heating and audio, and publishes Modbus, KNX and a web interface. It also separates fresh water from waste water with a physical air gap, which is why it carries DVGW drinking-water approval and needs no separate backflow preventer. The Sigma range publishes CE, VDE and GOST; the Omega range CE, VDE and DVGW. These are the manufacturer’s marks, supplied with the unit — Sauna Dekor’s own certificate is TS EN ISO 9001:2015.

Gulf Conditions

Water, Scale and Why Generators Fail Early in the Gulf

A steam generator that has run for ten years in northern Europe can fail inside two seasons on a Gulf project, and the reason is almost never the unit. It is the feedwater, the drain and the plant room it was put in.

Measure, don’t assume

Supply varies between desalinated municipal water, blended supply and tankered water on the same city. We test the actual feed on the project and size the scale strategy against that result rather than copying a figure forward from an earlier submittal.

Design the drain, not just the feed

Every flush cycle discharges hot water. The gully or tundish, the pipe material and the route have to be specified for that temperature and kept accessible, or the first blocked drain takes the room out of service.

Give the plant room air

Generators are routinely buried in sealed service cupboards behind finished tiling with no ventilation and no access. Heat builds, electronics age faster and the first cylinder change becomes a demolition job. Ventilation and a real hatch cost nothing at design stage.

Where It Goes

The Generator Is One Line in a Wet Package

A steam generator is rarely bought on its own. It sits inside a thermal circuit, and it is sized, positioned and controlled alongside everything else in that circuit — which is why we prefer to specify the whole wet package as one scope rather than as separate trades.

Who makes the generator, who makes the room, and which certificate covers which

The generator is built and certified by its own manufacturer — Condair in Switzerland and EOS in Germany on most of our projects. The room the generator serves is manufactured by Sauna Dekor at İkitelli OSB, Başakşehir, Istanbul, in a workshop of nineteen people, and is installed and commissioned by the same company, which has manufactured since 1987 and has completed work in more than 35 countries. A steam generator installer who does not also build the room is carrying half the scope; here the two halves sit with one contractor.

Sauna Dekor’s own certificate is TS EN ISO 9001:2015, covering the manufacture of sauna and spa products and after-sales service. It does not extend to the generator, which is supplied with the documentation of the company that manufactured it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who manufactures steam generators for commercial steam rooms?

Commercial steam generators are built by a small group of European equipment manufacturers — Condair in Switzerland and EOS in Germany are the two Sauna Dekor specifies most often, alongside comparable brands. Sauna Dekor is not the generator manufacturer: we are the steam room and hammam manufacturer and the installing contractor. We size the generator against the room, procure it, install it in the plant room, run the steam and condensate lines, wire the control, commission the system and carry the warranty on the installed package. The generator itself is warranted by its manufacturer.

What size steam generator do I need for my steam room?

Start from steam output in kilograms per hour, not from kilowatts. Multiply the internal volume of the room in cubic metres by a factor that depends on the wall finish: roughly 0.5 to 0.6 kg/h per cubic metre for an acrylic or prefabricated cabin, 0.75 to 1.0 for an insulated tiled or mosaic room, and 1.0 to 1.4 for a marble or natural stone hammam with cold, heavy surfaces. Then add for a glass door, a glazed facade or an external wall. The most common specification error is sizing on volume alone: a 12 cubic metre marble hammam needs roughly twice the steam of a 12 cubic metre acrylic cabin.

How many kW is a commercial steam generator?

Kilowatts follow from the kilograms per hour, and the figures are set by the manufacturer, not by the contractor. On the Condair Sigma range, for example, the published nominal power is 6.0 kW at 8 kg/h, 11.3 kW at 15 kg/h, 17.3 kW at 23 kg/h and 24.0 kW at 32 kg/h, with larger 45 and 65 kg/h models above that. Those are electrical loads the MEP engineer has to allocate at design stage, on a dedicated circuit, not discover during commissioning.

Does a steam generator run on tap water or softened water?

It depends on the type, and getting this wrong is the most expensive mistake on the whole package. An electrode-cylinder generator such as the Condair Sigma is designed to run on ordinary mains water, because it uses the conductivity of the water itself to boil it. Feed the same unit fully softened, demineralised or reverse-osmosis water and it will not reach current and will not make steam. A resistance-element generator works the other way round and is the type to use where treated water is unavoidable. The feedwater decision has to be made before the generator is ordered.

Where should the steam generator be installed?

In a dry, ventilated, drained plant room or service void with working space around the unit — never inside the steam room and never in a sealed cupboard behind finished tiling. The unit needs a floor gully or tundish for its flush water, an isolating valve on the feed, an accessible electrical isolator, and enough clearance to withdraw the steam cylinder. A service hatch sized around the largest component is agreed with the architect at design stage, because it cannot be created afterwards without breaking finished work.

How far can the steam generator be from the steam room?

As close as the layout allows. Every extra metre of steam line means more condensate, more heat loss and a slower room. The line is run in the shortest practical route, insulated over its full length, with a continuous fall so condensate drains back rather than collecting in a low point, and with wide-radius bends rather than sharp elbows. The manufacturer’s installation instructions set the maximum length for each model and we design to those, not to a rule of thumb.

How often does a commercial steam generator need servicing?

On hotel and club duty the practical answer is a scheduled visit at least twice a year, plus whatever automatic flushing the unit performs between visits. The consumable items are the steam cylinder or heating elements, the fill and drain valves, the level sensor and the seals. In hard-water Gulf supply, scale is the failure mechanism that decides the service interval, so the maintenance plan is written against the measured feedwater on the project, not against a generic schedule.

Can the steam generator be controlled from the hotel BMS?

Yes, on the models specified for that. The Condair Omega range, for example, publishes Modbus and KNX interfaces, a web interface and an integrated spa control that also drives room lighting, fragrance dosing, the fan, bench heating and audio from the same panel. Where a simpler in-room thermostat is used, its ingress protection has to be checked: a panel rated IP20 belongs outside the wet room, with only its temperature probe inside.

Do you supply the steam generator on its own, or only as part of a room?

Both. Most of our work is the complete room — a mosaic or marble steam room or hammam built by us with the generator, controls, steam head, drainage and ventilation included in one contract and one warranty. We also quote generator-only packages for consultants and main contractors who have the room already and need the equipment sized, supplied and commissioned correctly.

What certification does the equipment carry?

Sauna Dekor’s own certification is TS EN ISO 9001:2015 quality management, covering sauna and spa product manufacturing and after-sales service. The generators themselves carry their manufacturers’ certification: the Condair Sigma range publishes CE, VDE and GOST marking and the Condair Omega range publishes CE, VDE and DVGW, the German drinking-water approval. We supply the manufacturer’s declaration and test documentation with the unit as part of the material submittal, and we do not present a supplier’s certificate as our own.
