A hammam is rarely specified on its own. In the hotel spas and private residences we deliver across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Europe, the Turkish bath is one chapter in a designed sequence of heat, steam, mud and cold. These are the rooms most often built alongside it, each with its own engineering, plant and cost band.

The most common residential and hotel brief is not a Turkish bath on its own; it is a sauna and Turkish bath side by side. The two rooms are opposites in every service that matters, so the shared wall is the part that is designed first.

The sequencing between them is what the guest experiences: heat in the sauna cabin, wash and exfoliation on the göbek taşı, then cooling. Where a cold stage is added, it sits outside both rooms — an ice fountain, a shock bucket or a plunge — because putting a chilled element on a hammam wall condenses the room onto it. A hammam bathroom is a smaller commitment than a full Turkish bath, and it is the brief behind most home enquiries. What separates the three levels is how much of the room is heated and drained, not how it is finished.
The decision that cannot be deferred is the floor. A heated, drained hammam needs depth in the build-up for tanking, falls, insulation and heating loops, and it needs the slab level set accordingly. A hammam-style bathroom that a client later wants to heat is a demolition job, which is why we ask at concept stage which of the three is actually wanted.
Installation is where a hammam is won or lost, and it follows a fixed order because each stage buries the one before it.

Sauna Dekor. Our scope covers the tanked shell, the göbek taşı and its heating, the domed or vaulted ceiling, marble and mosaic finishes, steam and hot-water plant, kurna basins, drainage and commissioning.
A Turkish bath, or hammam, is a heated, humid bathing room built around a large heated marble platform. Bathers warm on the stone, are exfoliated with a coarse kese mitt, and are then washed with soap foam. The air sits at roughly 40–45 °C with 60–80 per cent humidity, and a full ritual runs 60 to 90 minutes rather than the 10 to 20 minutes of a steam room session.
The göbek taşı, literally belly stone, is the large heated marble platform at the centre of the hot room. It is heated from below by a hypocaust system, the same underfloor principle the Romans used, and its surface sits at roughly 38–42 °C. It is the defining element of an authentic Turkish bath, and it is the element that hybrid steam-room hammams most often leave out.
A Turkish bath works by radiant heat from a heated marble platform in a humid, domed chamber; a steam room works by convective heat from a generator filling a sealed cabin with saturated vapour. Air temperature is similar at 40–45 °C, but humidity is 60–80 per cent against 100 per cent, the architecture is different, and the session length is different — 60 to 90 attended minutes against 10 to 20 unattended ones.
In a thermal suite a hammam or steam room typically occupies 4–12 m² each, and ceiling height matters as much as floor area because the dome, the vault and the services above it all need depth. A room built around a full göbek taşı needs enough clear space for bathers to lie on the stone and for an attendant to work around it, which sets a practical lower limit well above a domestic steam cabin.
A Turkish bath is a warm, humid room rather than a hot, saturated one: air in the high thirties to low forties Celsius with relative humidity held well below saturation, and most of the heat arriving by radiation from the heated floor, benches and göbek taşı rather than from the air. That is what makes a long session possible, and it is also why the heating is hydronic and embedded rather than an appliance standing in the corner.
Yes, and it is the most common combined brief, but the shared partition carries a 40 °C temperature gradient and a humidity difference from 10–20 % to near saturation. The vapour barrier faces the hammam, the sauna side stays dry and timber-lined, and the two build systems meet at a drawn junction. Plant for both sits outside the rooms in an adjacent, accessible space.
A hammam bathroom is a finishes package — marble, zellige or Iznik tile and a kurna basin — in a room that is not heated or drained as a wet thermal chamber. A Turkish bath is a heated room with a göbek taşı or heated bench, hydronic loops, steam plant outside the room and continuous falls to a gully. A hammam shower sits between the two: tanked and graded, but not held at temperature.
Survey, then tanking signed off before it is covered, then the shell, benches, göbek taşı plinth and vaulted ceiling, then hydronic heating and plant with manifolds outside the wet room, then marble and mosaic set to the established falls, then commissioning under load. Each stage buries the one before it, so the order is fixed.
A single private room runs 10–14 weeks from design approval to commissioning, covering manufacture, shipping and installation. A hotel thermal suite containing a hammam runs longer, because approvals, waterproofing sign-off and MEP coordination sit on the critical path rather than the marble.
