What a Gulf climate does to an outdoor pool
An outdoor pool in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Qatar spends half the year losing heat it does not need to lose and the other half gaining heat nobody wants. Summer water can sit above 35 °C without cooling, which is why chillers — not just heaters — belong in a Gulf pool specification, and why heat pumps here are usually reversible. Evaporation is the second cost line: open water, high air temperature and wind combine to move a serious volume out of the pool every week, and that water has to be replaced, treated and re-balanced.

Pools differ by how the water surface is skimmed and how the body is built. Overflow and finish are chosen after the sizing and the hydraulics, not before.

Frequently asked questions
Does an outdoor pool in the Gulf need a chiller?
In most cases yes, at least for the summer months. Unshaded water in a Gulf summer can exceed a comfortable swimming temperature on its own, so we normally specify a reversible heat pump that heats in winter and cools in summer, sized against pool surface area, shading and whether a cover is fitted.
How much water does an outdoor pool lose to evaporation?
Enough that make-up water is a design item rather than an afterthought: loss rises with water temperature, air temperature, low humidity and wind exposure, all of which are high on an open Gulf site. A cover is the single most effective control, and it also cuts heating or cooling load and chemical consumption.
What finish is best for an outdoor pool?
Mosaic, tile, plaster and reinforced membrane all work outdoors; the choice is driven by movement, maintenance and glare rather than by appearance alone. Very dark finishes look striking in a render and measurably raise water temperature, which works against you in a Gulf summer.
How long does an outdoor pool take to build?
A villa-scale outdoor pool runs about 10–16 weeks from approved drawings to commissioning, covering excavation, shell, waterproofing, plant, finishes and water balancing. Resort and rooftop projects are programmed against the main contractor’s works.
