Roughly half the home spa briefs that reach us start with the same either/or: “steam shower or sauna?” It is the wrong question, or at least an incomplete one, because the two do different things and, increasingly, the best home wellness rooms we build include both, sequenced together. In a recent Dubai penthouse we delivered a single glazed wet zone holding a steam shower and, one step away, a compact infrared sauna, so the owner moves from moist heat to dry heat without leaving the room.

If the bathroom already has a shower and room for only one or two people, a steam shower is the simpler build. If several people will use it together, or the steam is part of a wider spa circuit, it needs to be a steam room.

A sauna holds dry air at 80–100 °C. A steam shower or steam room holds air at 40–50 °C at close to 100 % relative humidity. At the same moment the two feel very different: dry air lets you sit in a much hotter room, while saturated air feels heavy and hot at half the temperature.

The combination lets a household match the modality to the day, gentle moist heat one evening, intense dry sweat after training, and lets one person move between them in a single session.

The three options are not three price points on one scale; they are three different building problems. A steam shower is a wet-room build, so its cost is decided by the envelope: tanking, a sloped floor and a rated drain, a vapour-tight ceiling that falls to a drip line, and a generator with a plant location within a sensible pipe run. In hard water — which includes most of the Gulf — treatment for the generator feed belongs in that first budget rather than in the first repair bill. A sauna is a joinery build: its cost follows timber grade, cabin volume, heater sizing, glass area and bench craft, and its wet-zone demands are comparatively light. A combined zone is not the sum of the two. One shared wet floor has to serve a room at 100 % humidity and a room that must stay dry, which means the waterproofing envelope, the drainage falls and the ventilation strategy all have to be designed once, for both — and that shared design, done by one team rather than three, is precisely where the cost either lands sensibly or runs away. Size, finish grade and how far power, water and drainage have to travel to reach the room move all three.

In a hard-water region — which includes most of the Gulf — an untreated steam generator scales up and dies.
