What Does a Spa Designer Do? A 2026 Guide

Sauna Dekor Spa Solutions engineering team, Istanbul · reviewed 2 October 2026 · project and press enquiries: Alican Aykaç, Managing Partner

A spa designer is the specialist who plans a spa’s layout and wet areas: the order of the rooms, sauna and steam room sizes, ventilation, drainage, materials and lighting, before a contractor builds it. Sauna Dekor Spa Solutions designs and builds these spaces in-house and has done so since 1987, in 41+ countries.

What is a spa designer? In today’s fast-paced world, wellness has become a necessity—not a luxury. As the demand for holistic health experiences continues to rise, more entrepreneurs, hotel owners, and wellness investors are looking to build or renovate spa facilities that blend luxury, relaxation, and functionality. At the heart of this transformation lies one crucial professional: the spa designer.

Whether you’re creating a boutique day spa, a hotel spa center, or a full-scale medical spa, the right designer can transform your vision into a sensory-rich reality. In this guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about choosing a spa designer, what makes a spa design successful, and how a professional contractor like Saunadekor can help bring your dream spa to life.

A spa designer is a specialized interior architect who focuses on designing wellness environments. Their work combines technical planning, aesthetic styling, and sensory experience to create spaces for relaxation and rest.

Unlike general interior designers, spa designers understand the specific operational needs of wellness facilities, such as:

• Heat and humidity zones

• Acoustic planning for soundproofing

• Hygiene regulations

• Energy-efficient lighting

• Water circulation systems

• Flow of guests between wet and dry areas

Their designs merge architecture, engineering, and human-centered design to deliver exceptional wellness experiences.

1. First Impressions Drive Business

The first few seconds inside a spa determine whether a guest feels comfortable, calm, and impressed. From lighting and scent to layout and textures, every design choice affects the guest’s emotional state. A professional spa designer knows how to design that “wow” factor while ensuring operational efficiency.

2. Smart Space Usage = Higher ROI

A spa that’s poorly laid out will struggle with guest flow, staff productivity, and hygiene. A well-designed spa, however, maximizes square footage, energy use, and service speed—resulting in higher revenue and lower operational costs.

3. Regulatory Compliance

Spa facilities often require special permits, safety features, ventilation systems, and accessibility standards. Working with an experienced spa architecture team ensures your design is legally compliant and passes inspections quickly.

Designing a spa isn’t just about luxury aesthetics—it’s about creating a space that activates all senses while meeting functional needs. Here are the most critical elements:

1. Zoning and Flow

A good spa layout separates public and private zones. Guests should never feel exposed or confused. Clear transitions between waiting areas, changing rooms, treatment rooms, and wet areas ensure a seamless experience.

2. Sensory Design

Spa design must appeal to:

• Sight: Soft lighting, organic forms, natural materials

• Sound: Acoustic insulation, water features, ambient music

• Smell: Ventilation systems for aroma diffusion

• Touch: High-quality textiles, natural stone, and wood

• Temperature: Controlled zones for saunas, steam rooms, plunge pools

3. Materials Selection

Spa materials must be both beautiful and durable. Common choices include:

• Ayous or pine for sauna rooms

• Natural stone for massage areas

• Anti-slip ceramic or epoxy floors in wet zones

• UV-resistant finishes in sunlit spaces

4. Lighting

Layered lighting design is essential—general lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting should work in harmony. Dimmable systems and warm color temperatures evoke relaxation and reduce stress.

5. Sustainability

Modern clients are drawn to eco-conscious design. A spa designer integrates green solutions like:

• Solar-powered heating for pools

• Greywater recycling

• Low-VOC materials

• Efficient insulation and LED lighting

1. Day Spa

• Smaller footprint

• Emphasis on aesthetics and comfort

• Flexible treatment rooms

2. Hotel Spa

• Must align with the hotel’s branding

• Requires larger lounge and relaxation zones

• Often connected to pool or fitness center

3. Medical Spa (MediSpa)

• Clinical functionality meets luxurious environment

• Requires specialized lighting and hygiene standards

• Separate zones for beauty and medical procedures

4. Wellness Retreat

• Often in remote natural settings

• Design includes outdoor areas, yoga decks, cabins

• Focus on holistic lifestyle and long guest stays

A spa designer can only plan rooms that the building can serve. Send these five items with the first enquiry:

• Drawings of the space: plans, sections, ceiling heights and any structural limits.
• The services available: power, water, drainage, ventilation routes and space for a plant room.
• Who will use the spa and how many at once: hotel guests, members, residents or day guests.
• The room list, split into rooms you need and rooms that are optional.
• The programme and approvals: the opening date and the local authority or operator standards that apply.

Sauna Dekor has designed, manufactured and installed spa rooms since 1987, so each room is checked against these services before the layout is fixed.
