What was built
A single Finnish cabin, entered through a glass door. Inside: a vaulted cedar ceiling, a continuous LED line following the bench, cedar benches with a fitted backrest, a floor-standing stone heater in the corner filled with sauna stones, a bucket and ladle on the shelf, a wall-mounted control and a white pebble bed at the threshold. The cabin reads lengthwise, with the heater at the far end from the door.
The technical decisions behind it
Heater class
A floor-standing stone heater rather than a wall unit, filled deep with stones. The charge depth is the decision that shapes how the cabin actually feels: a deep charge releases slowly and rounds off the steam when water is thrown, and it recovers temperature faster between throws than a shallow wall unit of the same rating. The trade is footprint — a floor-standing body needs a guard and a defined clearance zone, and that zone has to be drawn into the bench layout, not negotiated on site.
Heat load
We size at roughly 1 kW of heater output per cubic metre of insulated cabin volume, then add about 1 kW per square metre of glazing, because glass gives its heat straight back to the space outside instead of storing it. In a cabin like this the glass door and any glazed panel are the whole of that addition; the rest of the envelope is lined timber over insulation.
The vaulted ceiling
A vault raises the hot layer above head height and makes the bench zone feel more even than a flat ceiling of the same height. The detail that decides whether it works is invisible: the vapour-tight layer has to follow the vault, with the ventilated cavity behind the lining maintained around the curve. Flattening the barrier across the vault leaves a cold pocket where moisture will collect.
Bench construction
Kiln-dried, low-resin cedar. Boards fixed from below so no metal fastening reaches a seating surface, spaced so the seat drains and dries, and set out so the heater clearance is respected at the lower bench where it matters most. Continuous LED is run as an indirect line under the bench nose, with the driver outside the cabin envelope.
Ventilation
Supply low near the heater, extract low on the opposite wall, roughly three to six air changes an hour in use, plus an extract run-on that dries the cabin after the session. Placing the heater at the far end from the door sets that diagonal cleanly, which is one reason the cabin is laid out lengthwise.
The pebble bed
At the threshold, the pebble bed is a drained, non-slip strip between the cabin floor and the surrounding finish. It keeps splash water off the timber edge and gives the transition a physical marker — useful in a villa where the sauna opens directly onto a living space.
What the site required
Al Barari villas sit in a densely planted, low-rise setting, and the sauna here is a room inside a finished house rather than an outbuilding. That fixes three things before design starts: the slab-to-slab depth available once the ceiling void and vault are allowed for, the electrical capacity on the existing board for the heater, and the ventilation route out of a room that may not have an external wall to work with. Where no external wall is available, supply air is taken from a conditioned internal space, which also keeps dust out of the cabin. The cabin was prefabricated and dry-assembled in our Istanbul workshop, then numbered, dismantled and shipped for assembly on site.

Frequently asked questions
What does a floor-standing stone heater do that a wall heater does not?
It carries a deeper charge of stones. The depth of that charge is what decides how the room behaves when water is thrown — a shallow charge gives a short sharp burst, a deep one gives a slower, rounder release and recovers temperature faster between throws.
Why is there a pebble bed in the sauna?
It is a floor detail at the cabin threshold. Practically it gives a drained, non-slip strip that separates the cabin floor from the surrounding finish and keeps splash water off the timber.
Can a sauna have a vaulted ceiling?
Yes, and it changes the room for the better — the hot layer sits higher and the bench zone feels more even. It has to be built with the vapour-tight layer following the vault rather than being flattened across it, which is the detail most often got wrong.
How much space does a private villa sauna need?
Less than most people expect for two people, and more than most expect for four — because the bench length, the heater clearance zone and the door swing all have to coexist. We set the cabin size from the bench layout and the heater’s own clearance table, not from a floor-area rule of thumb.
