Short answer: Olympic pool dimensions are fixed by World Aquatics: an Olympic pool is 50 m long and 25 m wide, with a depth of at least 2 m and 3 m recommended, and 8 lanes of 2.5 m plus 2 outer lanes. Sauna Dekor Spa Solutions builds pools for hotels, clubs and homes; this page sets out what those figures mean for the people designing one.

What are the Olympic pool dimensions?

50 m long, 25 m wide, at least 2 m deep with 3 m recommended, and laid out as 8 lanes of 2.5 m with 2 outer lanes. Those are the World Aquatics figures for pools used at the Olympic Games and world championships. A "50 m pool" is not automatically an Olympic pool; it must meet all of them.

ItemWorld Aquatics valueWhat it means on the drawing
Length50.0 m, tolerance +0.010 / −0.000 mThe finished length between touch panels, never shorter
Width25.0 mSet by the lanes, not by the hall
Depthat least 2 m, 3 m recommendedDrives excavation, structure and water volume
Lanes8 × 2.5 m plus 2 outer lanesLane ropes, markings and wall targets follow this grid
Water temperature25–28 °CSets heating or cooling and hall air conditions

Why does the 50 m length have a tolerance?

Because a record must be swum over the full distance. The length tolerance is +0.010 m and −0.000 m: the pool may be up to 10 mm long, never short. Tiles, adhesive and touch panels all take space, so the shell is built to the finished figure, not to the concrete line.

In practice the builder fixes the finish build-up early: wall tile, bed thickness and touch-panel depth at both ends. The concrete shell is then set out so that the finished surfaces land inside the tolerance. A shell poured to 50 m before the finishes are chosen almost always ends up short.

The surveyor checks the finished length before handover, because certification depends on it. Our page on Olympic swimming pools describes how we build them.

How deep is an Olympic pool?

At least 2 m, with 3 m recommended by World Aquatics. The extra depth makes the water calmer and the pool usable for more disciplines, but it also means more excavation, a heavier structure and more water to treat. The decision is taken with the structural engineer before the shell is designed.

A common error is to write the depth as 2.5 m, which is the lane width, not a depth figure. On drawings the depth is shown as a minimum and the recommended value side by side, so the client chooses knowingly.

Depth also sets the plant. More water means a larger filtration and circulation system, which is why the plant room is drawn with the shell. Our note on better water circulation in a pool explains the principle.

How many lanes does an Olympic pool have?

8 competition lanes of 2.5 m, plus 2 outer lanes along the side walls, all within the 25 m width. The outer lanes reduce wave reflection from the walls into lanes 1 and 8. Writing "10 lanes" for an Olympic pool is a common mistake: 2 of the 10 are spare outer lanes.

The lane grid fixes far more than the ropes. Floor markings, wall targets, rope anchors and the starting platforms all follow it, so they are set out on the shell drawing before concrete is poured. Overflow edges help keep the surface calm; our article on pool overflow types compares the options.

What water temperature does an Olympic pool need?

25–28 °C. In the Gulf an outdoor competition pool may need cooling for much of the year rather than heating, and an indoor pool hall needs air conditions that suit that water temperature. The water target is fixed first; the plant and the hall air handling follow it.

Indoor pools also need dehumidification of the hall, because warm water evaporates continuously. That load is part of the MEP design, not an add-on. For indoor options, see our page on indoor swimming pools.

Do hotels and homes need Olympic dimensions?

Rarely. Hotels, clubs and villas usually need a pool for exercise or leisure, not for certified competition. A long, narrow pool of 1 or 2 lanes gives a good swim in far less space, and a training pool can follow the 2.5 m lane width without meeting the full 50 m by 25 m outline.

Where a club does want competition use, the brief has to say so before design: certification is a matter of finished dimensions, markings and equipment, and it cannot be added later. For narrow plots, our guide to the lap pool sets out the options.

Frequently asked questions about Olympic pool dimensions

How long and wide is an Olympic pool?

50 m long and 25 m wide under World Aquatics rules. The length has a tolerance of +0.010 m and −0.000 m, so the finished pool may be up to 10 mm long but never short of 50 m.

How deep is an Olympic swimming pool?

At least 2 m, with 3 m recommended by World Aquatics. The deeper option gives calmer water and more uses, but it adds excavation, structure and water volume, so it is chosen with the structural engineer early.

Does an Olympic pool have 8 or 10 lanes?

It has 8 competition lanes of 2.5 m, plus 2 outer lanes along the walls. The outer lanes are not raced in; they keep reflected waves away from lanes 1 and 8.

What temperature is the water in an Olympic pool?

25–28 °C. In a hot climate an outdoor pool may need cooling for much of the year, and an indoor pool hall needs air conditions and dehumidification that match the water temperature.

Is every 50 m pool an Olympic pool?

No. A 50 m pool is Olympic-size only if it also meets the width, depth, lane, marking and tolerance rules. Many 50 m club pools are narrower or shallower and are perfectly good for training.

Does a hotel pool need Olympic dimensions?

Almost never. A hotel or villa usually needs a pool for exercise and leisure. A long lane pool with 2.5 m lanes gives a good swim without the full 50 m by 25 m outline or competition certification.
