A private villa spa suite on Palm Jumeirah
Sauna Dekor designs, manufactures and installs thermal rooms as a turnkey contractor. Founded in Istanbul in 1987, now in our 40th year, with projects in more than 35 countries. This page documents a private villa on Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where we built a spa suite around a Finnish sauna with a backlit Himalayan salt wall.
What was built
A dry-heat cabin entered through a glass door, with a floor-standing stone heater, tiered benches, a fibre-optic star ceiling, and a full wall of backlit Himalayan salt brick that reads as the room’s light source. The salt wall is visible from outside through the glazed front, which makes it the suite’s focal element rather than an interior surface only the bather sees.
The technical decisions behind it
Salt belongs in a dry room
Salt brick is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air around it. That makes a dry Finnish cabin the only heat room it belongs in. It is never specified for a steam room or a hammam, and inside the sauna it is kept clear of the direct splash zone where water is thrown onto the stones. If salt is allowed to sit damp, it does not simply mark; it slowly loses its edges.
The cavity behind the wall
A backlit salt wall is built as a ventilated, drained cavity: the LED channel runs in the void, the driver sits outside the cabin envelope, and the back face of the salt is left free to dry. Building salt tight against a sealed substrate traps whatever moisture the brick picks up, which is the usual reason a salt feature ages badly.
Heat load
Both the salt wall and the glazed front count as load. We size at roughly 1 kW per cubic metre of insulated volume and then add for every square metre of glass and of dense uninsulated surface — salt brick behaves much more like stone than like a lined timber wall. Sizing this cabin on volume alone would leave the heater permanently working against two cold faces.
Fibre optics rather than fittings
The star ceiling is fibre optic. The illuminator and driver sit outside the cabin and only the fibre ends come through the lining, so there is no electrical fitting sitting in the hottest part of the room. It also keeps the ceiling’s vapour-tight layer intact except at one controlled entry.
Ventilation
Supply low near the heater, extract low and diagonally opposite, roughly three to six air changes an hour in use, with an extract run-on that dries the cabin afterwards. On a cabin with a salt wall, the drying cycle carries more weight than usual: the salt is the element that most rewards a dry room.
Timber and fixings
Kiln-dried, low-resin linings and benches, boards fixed from below so no metal is exposed on a seating face, cladding floating on battens over a vapour-tight layer with a ventilated cavity behind. The salt wall’s own frame is isolated from that build-up rather than sharing it.
What the site required
The suite sits inside a completed beachfront villa. Two site conditions shaped it. First, the residual slab-to-slab height after the ceiling void, the ventilation path and the heater clearance were stacked — the star ceiling had to be resolved within that depth. Second, the marine setting: fresh air for the cabin is taken from a conditioned internal space rather than pierced through an external wall, so the room is not drawing salt-laden coastal air into its own supply. The cabin itself was prefabricated and dry-assembled in our Istanbul workshop, then numbered, dismantled and shipped for assembly on site.

Frequently asked questions
Can a salt wall be built into a sauna?
Into a dry Finnish cabin, yes. Salt brick is hygroscopic — it draws moisture out of the air — so it belongs in a dry, well-ventilated room and never in a steam room or hammam. It is kept out of the direct löyly splash zone and back-ventilated so any moisture it does pick up can leave.
Does a salt wall change how the sauna is heated?
Yes. A salt brick wall is a dense, largely uninsulated surface, so it is counted as added load in the same way glass is. The heater is sized for the cabin volume and then increased for the salt and glass surfaces in the envelope.
What is behind a backlit salt wall?
A sealed, drained and ventilated cavity carrying the LED channel, with the driver outside the cabin. The cavity is as much a moisture-management detail as a lighting one — it gives the back face of the salt somewhere to dry to.
Is a fibre-optic ceiling safe at sauna temperature?
The fibres carry light, not current, and the illuminator sits outside the hot envelope, so there is no electrical fitting inside the cabin ceiling. That is exactly why it is the usual choice for a star ceiling in a heat room.
