Overview
Sauna Dekor is a sauna, hammam and spa manufacturer and turnkey contractor. We have built thermal areas since 1987, we are in our 40th year, and our joinery, marble and cabin work is produced in our own workshop in İkitelli, Istanbul before it ships. Projects have been delivered in more than 35 countries.
This project is a sauna and steam room built into a private residence in Munich, Germany. The owner is not named; the page records the city, the property type and the work. The zoneslisted are steam room and sauna.
Scope of work
A domestic thermal pair: a timber sauna cabin and a sealed steam enclosure with itsgenerator, together with the room build-up, tanking, finishes, ventilation terminals, drainageand commissioning. Manufactured and dry-assembled in our Istanbul workshop, then dismantled, numbered, shipped and installed.
Wet rooms below sewer level
German houses of this type have deep, well-built basements, and that is where a home spausually goes — which introduces a problem that never arises on a ground floor: the drainageoutlet can sit below the level of the public sewer. Gravity will not do the work, so the wetrooms discharge into a lifting station, and that has consequences the finishes have to respect. The unit needs accessible, serviceable positioning rather than being buried behind a panel; itneeds a non-return arrangement so the sewer cannot back up into the room; and it makes floorfalls and gully placement even more important, because water that does not reach the gully hasnowhere else to go. Establishing this before the slab is cut is what keeps a basement spa outof trouble.
Sizing and sealing the steam enclosure
General practice sizes a steam generator on enclosure volume, applies a correction for thefinish material — stone or mosaic on a masonry backing is a large thermal mass and needs morethan the same volume over insulated board — then adds headroom for door openings. The enclosureis under vapour pressure rather than merely splashed, so it is tanked over screed, walls andceiling, with reinforcing tape into every corner, movement joint and service penetration, epoxygrout throughout, and a coved or pitched ceiling so condensate runs to the perimeter. The steamhead sits low, away from every seat. Seesteam room andhow to build a steam room.
The sauna, ventilation and drying down
The dry cabin is sized at roughly a kilowatt of stone-heater output per cubic metre of volumewith additions for glazing and masonry, connected by a local electrician to the national wiringrules, on a three-phase circuit above a modest rating; the equipment carries CE and EN 60335certification from its manufacturer. Air enters low at the heater and leaves low on theopposite side. The steam room needs an extract that keeps running after the session ends —a basement wet room sealed up wet has nowhere to dry to, and that is what shortens the life ofgrout, seals and linings. Seesauna.
What we solved on site
The binding constraint was the basement floor build-up. Falls to the gully, the tankinglayer and the finish all come out of the same depth, and the lifting station’s inlet fixed thelevel everything else had to work back from. We set that first, worked the falls from it, anddesigned the build-up to the depth that remained rather than to a standard detail. Everythingwas made and dry-assembled in ourIstanbul workshop and delivered numbered. Seeprivate spa.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when a basement spa sits below sewer level?
Gravity drainage is not possible, so the wet rooms discharge into a lifting station. That unit needs serviceable access, a non-return arrangement so the sewer cannot back up, and correspondingly careful floor falls.
How is a steam generator sized for a domestic enclosure?
On volume, corrected for the finish material, plus headroom for door openings. Stone or mosaic over masonry is a large thermal mass and needs more output than the same volume built over insulated board.
Why must a basement steam room be dried after use?
Because it has nowhere else to dry to. An extract that keeps running after the session is what preserves the grout, seals and linings; a room sealed up wet has a much shorter life.
What sets the levels in a basement wet room?
The drainage inlet. Falls, tanking and finish all come out of one depth, so the outlet level is fixed first and the build-up is designed to what remains rather than to a standard detail.
