A private villa Finnish sauna on Palm Jumeirah
Sauna Dekor designs, manufactures and installs saunas and spa rooms as one turnkey package, from Istanbul, since 1987 — our 40th year — with delivery in more than 35 countries. This page documents a private villa on Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where we built a traditional Finnish sauna in red cedar. Completed in 2025.
What was built
A single dry-heat cabin lined throughout in red cedar, with tiered benches, a concealed LED line along the bench edges, a fitted backrest and a fibre-optic star ceiling. It is a classic Finnish room rather than a hybrid or infrared cabin: one stone heater, one heat regime, and a build-up designed around it.
The technical decisions behind it
Why red cedar
Cedar is chosen on four properties, in this order: low resin, so the surface does not weep at operating temperature; low thermal conductivity, so a bench is comfortable to sit on at temperatures where a metal or dense surface would not be; dimensional stability through repeated heat and cool cycles; and natural durability. In a villa cabin used several times a week, the third property is the one that decides whether joints stay tight after a couple of years.
Construction without glue
Linings and benches are kiln-dried and fixed mechanically — boards from below so no metal fastening reaches a seating face, cladding floating on battens over a vapour-tight layer with a ventilated cavity behind so the wall can dry in both directions. Adhesives are kept out of the cabin build-up. In a room that runs hot for years, a glue line is a future failure and a source of odour; a mechanical fixing is neither.
The star ceiling is fibre optic for a reason
The illuminator and driver sit outside the cabin; only the fibre ends come through the lining. That keeps every electrical component out of the hottest part of the room and reduces the ceiling’s vapour-barrier penetrations from one per light point to one in total. Any star ceiling built from individual fittings in a heat room is buying a maintenance problem.
Heat load
Roughly 1 kW of heater output per cubic metre of insulated volume, plus about 1 kW per square metre of glazing. On a lined cabin like this the timber envelope over insulation does the storage work, so the glazed door and any glass panel are the whole of the addition — which is why a fully lined cedar cabin can be heated with a smaller unit than a glass-fronted room of the same volume.
Ventilation
Supply low near the heater so incoming air is drawn into the convection plume, extract low and diagonally opposite, roughly three to six air changes an hour during a session, with an extract run-on afterwards to dry the cabin. The drying cycle is the single most effective maintenance measure on a timber cabin.
Bench lighting
LED run as an indirect line under the bench nose rather than as a downlight, keeping the source out of the bather’s eye line and the driver outside the cabin envelope, where it will not slowly cook inside the wall build-up.
What the site required
Palm Jumeirah is a marine setting, and that changes one decision in particular: fresh air for the cabin is taken from a conditioned internal space rather than pierced through an external wall, so the room is not pulling salt-laden coastal air into its own supply. Beyond that, the constraints were those of any finished villa — the slab-to-slab depth left once the ceiling void and ventilation path were allowed for, and the electrical capacity available on the existing distribution board. The cabin was prefabricated and dry-assembled in our Istanbul workshop, verified against the surveyed opening, then numbered, dismantled and shipped for assembly on site.

Frequently asked questions
Why red cedar for a sauna?
It is low in resin, low in thermal conductivity and dimensionally stable through repeated heat cycles, so bench and wall surfaces stay comfortable to touch and the cabin does not move. It is also naturally durable, which matters in a room that is heated and cooled several times a week.
How is a star ceiling built into a sauna?
With fibre optics. The illuminator and its driver sit outside the cabin and only the fibre ends pass through the lining, so there is no electrical fitting in the hottest part of the room and the ceiling’s vapour-tight layer is pierced once rather than at every light point.
Does a coastal location change how a sauna is built?
It changes where the air comes from. We take the cabin’s fresh-air supply from a conditioned internal space rather than piercing an external wall, so the room is not drawing salt-laden coastal air into its own supply.
Is a sauna in a villa a fixed cabin or a modular one?
Both, in sequence. We prefabricate and dry-assemble the cabin in our Istanbul workshop, check it against the surveyed opening, then number, dismantle and ship it for assembly on site — so it is a bespoke fixed cabin, built off site to keep fabrication out of a finished house.

Our own company certification is TS EN ISO 9001:2015 quality management, issued against a scope of sauna and spa product manufacturing and after-sales service. The equipment we install — heaters, steam generators, controls — carries its own CE / EN 60335, TÜV, GS and comparable approvals from its manufacturers, such as EOS, Sentiotec and Condair. We do not present those supplier approvals as our own.
