Experience Shower and Vichy Shower Manufacturer for Gulf Hotel Spas

An experience shower and a Vichy shower are two different named products, and the confusion between them costs projects money. An experience shower is a vertical, guest-operated cubicle that runs a programmed sequence of water patterns and temperatures between the heat rooms and the cold ones. A Vichy shower is horizontal: a rail of jets over a wet table, operated by a therapist while the guest lies down. Both are a services problem before they are a product choice — every effect adds a flow rate, a pressure and a drainage requirement that the building has to carry.

Experience shower. A vertical cubicle, roughly 1–2 m², in which valves, shower heads, side jets, lighting and a control interface are combined so that one button releases a defined effect: a warm tropical rain, a cold fog, a bucket drench. It is also sold as an adventure shower, a sensory shower or an erlebnisdusche, and all four names describe the same thing. Its job in a spa is to make the next step in the circuit possible — the rinse that lets a guest leave a Finnish sauna or a hammam and enter a cold plunge or a snow room without a shock the body has not been prepared for. Experience showers are normally specified as a run of two or three so guests are not queuing at the single point where the circuit narrows.

A Vichy shower belongs next to the treatment rooms and the rasul or mud ritual room, not in the cold zone. It draws water continuously for the length of a treatment, so its demand on the hot water plant and on the drain is a load, not an intermittent fixture. How We Build an Experience Shower

We survey the shell first and take the levels, because the two things that decide whether an experience shower can be built where the drawings put it are the depth available behind the wall for the manifold and the fall available under the floor for the drain. Once those are confirmed we set the effect list against the rooms either side of the cubicle, size the hot and cold supply for the effects rather than for the tap, agree the concealed valve position and its access panel with the MEP contractor, and only then fix the finishes.

The build itself is a wet-area build: tanked wall and floor, falls formed in the screed, a bonded waterproofing membrane dressed into the drain flange, fixings for the bar and the panel set behind the membrane rather than drilled through it, then tiling, grouting, glazing and the control interface. We commission the shower together with the heat and cold rooms it serves, not on its own, because the sequence is what is being handed over. We build the same scope as a main package, as a wet-area subcontractor under a fit-out contractor, or as a subconsultant to a design team.

Vichy Shower: Bar, Wet Table and Drain

A Vichy shower is three separate purchases that have to be coordinated as one: the jet bar and its thermostatic valve set, the wet table, and the tanked floor and drain beneath them. The bar is the least difficult of the three. The wet table decides the rest: a manufactured unit arrives with its own fall, edge radius and drainage connection, while a built plinth has to be tanked, given its own fall, and finished with a radiused edge so that water leaves the surface at the foot rather than over the therapist’s side.

The surface is heated, because a guest lying still under water on an unheated slab will not stay on it. Table height is set to the therapist who will use it, not to a catalogue default. Below, the floor takes the full jet flow for the whole treatment, so we drain it with a channel rather than a single point gully wherever the layout allows, keep the branch run short, and leave the trap reachable from the room. Experience shower or Vichy shower: naming the thing you are buying

Most wet-area tenders we price arrive with the line item written as “shower systems”, and that single generic phrase hides two products with almost nothing in common except water. Getting the name right at tender stage is not pedantry; it changes the hot water calculation, the drainage design, the room it goes in and the person who operates it.

Where a brief says “experience shower” but shows a treatment table on the plan, it means a Vichy shower, and the hot water and drainage figures in the services schedule will be wrong. We flag that at tender rather than at commissioning.

Experience showers as part of the circuit

An experience shower is a transition, not a fixture. It sits between the heat rooms and the cold ones, and its job is to make the next step in the sequence possible — which is why we plan a run of them with the rest of the thermal suite rather than as sanitaryware chosen at the end. Because they carry water, steam, light and control in the same one to two square metres of wall, the services behind an experience shower are denser than anything else in the wet area. That density is the whole reason this product fails on site: a cubicle that would have worked had it been coordinated in the shell is squeezed into a wall build-up that cannot take the manifold, or into a floor that cannot take the fall.

Effects are chosen against the rooms either side of the shower, not from a catalogue. Vichy shower: the bar, the wet table and the space under it

A Vichy shower is a horizontal rail of jets over a table, and the rail is the easy part. The table decides the project. A manufactured wet table arrives with its own fall, its own edge radius and a drainage connection already resolved; a built plinth has to be tanked like a floor, given a fall towards the foot, and finished with a radiused edge so water does not run off the side the therapist is standing on. Either way the surface is heated, because a guest lying still under moving water on a cold slab will not stay there, and the height is set to the therapist who will work at it rather than to a catalogue default.

The valve set is the second decision. The therapist adjusts temperature and jet pattern while the treatment is running, so the valves have to be within reach on their side of the table, marked so they can be read wet, and mounted where they can be serviced without demolishing tiling. Water: flow, pressure and thermostatic control

The single most common specification error we correct is treating an experience shower or a Vichy shower as a fixture unit. They are not. A bar with several effects, or a Vichy rail with a row of open jets, is a load on the hot water plant, and it has to be added to the plant calculation as a load. Where a spa runs a row of three showers off a circuit that was sized for domestic bathrooms, the first guest gets the design temperature and the third gets whatever is left.

  • Balanced pressure. Hot and cold have to arrive at the valve at similar pressure. Where they do not, no thermostatic valve will hold a stable outlet temperature, and the fault will be blamed on the shower rather than on the riser.
  • Thermostatic mixing. Valves for this duty are covered by ASSE 1017, ASSE 1069 and ASSE 1070 in North American specifications and by EN 1111 and EN 15092 in European ones. The property that matters is fail-safe closure: if the cold supply is lost, the valve shuts rather than passing unmixed hot water.
  • Pipe sizing. Size the branch for the bar, not for a tap. A cascade or a set of body jets can draw more than every other outlet in the room combined.
  • Water quality. Fine mist and fog nozzles block first in hard water. Pre-treatment on the feed, and nozzle sets that can be removed and descaled without breaking the wall, are cheaper than a mist circuit that is dead in its second season.
  • Water safety and flushing. Any shower that stands unused between seasons or between shifts needs a written flushing regime as part of the building’s water safety plan — ASHRAE 188 and HSE HSG274 are the usual reference documents. This is a plumbing compliance requirement, and it belongs in the operations manual we hand over.

Drainage, falls and the tanked build-up

A drench bucket releases its whole volume in one movement, which is a different drainage problem from a shower head. Size the gully on the open area of the grate rather than on the nominal diameter of the pipe below it, because it is the grate that limits the rate at which water leaves the floor. Where the layout allows, we use a linear channel instead of a point gully: it takes a wider sheet of water, it lets the floor be laid to a single fall rather than four, and it keeps the fall shallow enough that a guest is not walking on a slope.

  • Falls are formed in the screed, not in the tile bed, and they are set out before the waterproofing goes down.
  • Branch runs are kept short and the trap is left reachable — through the channel body or through a floor access, from inside the room. Gravity drainage inside buildings is covered by EN 12056; floor drain performance by ASME A112.6.3 in North American work.
  • The build-up is fully tanked: a bonded, load-bearing waterproofing membrane to ANSI A118.10 or EN 14891, dressed into the drain flange collar and turned up the wall past the highest splash line.
  • Fixings for the bar, the panel and the bucket frame are set into the substrate behind the membrane. A stainless bracket drilled through a finished tanked wall is a leak with a warranty claim attached.

Surfaces, grout and slip resistance

An experience shower is one of the few surfaces in a building that is wet, warm and mechanically scrubbed every single day, and material choices that survive elsewhere in the spa fail here. Glass mosaic and porcelain hold. Microcement holds where the system is specified for constant immersion rather than for a domestic bathroom. Calcareous natural stone is the usual disappointment: it looks right at handover and it etches under the acidic descalers that the same nozzle blockages force housekeeping to use.

  • Grout. In the shower field we specify a reaction-resin grout classified RG to EN 13888 and ISO 13007, not a cement grout, and we keep movement joints in the programme rather than tiling through them.
  • Slip resistance. Wet barefoot areas are classified under DIN 51097 (groups A, B and C); shod plant and back-of-house areas under DIN 51130 (R ratings). A spa floor specified to the wrong one of those two standards is a common and expensive substitution.
  • Light and control. Fittings are selected to the IP rating appropriate to the zone they sit in under IEC 60529, and the control electronics live outside the wet zone with only the interface inside it.

MEP coordination and service access

Almost every defect we are called to on somebody else’s experience shower comes from one of six coordination items being agreed too late. We issue them as a package at the start rather than as requests for information at second fix:

  • Wall build-up depth confirmed against the manifold and the concealed valve body.
  • Valve access panel position agreed, dimensioned and finished as a designed element — because the single most common avoidable defect in this trade is a concealed valve that can only be reached by breaking finished mosaic.
  • Drainage invert level and available fall confirmed against the structural slab.
  • A dedicated electrical circuit for control, lighting and any dosing, with the zone boundaries drawn.
  • Builder’s work openings and structural fixings for the bucket frame and ceiling panel, issued before the shell is closed.
  • Control interface position, outside the splash zone but inside the guest’s reach.

We hand over with the shower commissioned as part of its circuit, alongside the steam room, sauna and ice fountain either side of it, because the sequence is what the operator is taking on, not the individual boxes.

Maintenance an operator should plan for

Written into the operations manual, not left to be discovered:

  • Daily: rinse down and wipe the cubicle with the hand shower, clear the grate.
  • Weekly: remove and descale mist and fog nozzles; check that every effect still runs at the temperature the panel says it does.
  • Periodically: flush outlets that have stood unused, per the water safety plan.
  • Annually: service the thermostatic valve, replace seals and cartridges, inspect the membrane at the drain flange, check bar and bucket fixings.
  • Held on site: a spares kit of nozzles, cartridges and seals. Lead times are the reason a cubicle stays out of service, not the repair itself.

In the cold zone, immediately outside the heat rooms and next to the plunge or ice, before the heated rest area. Experience showers take roughly 1–2 m² each and are usually specified as a run of two or three so several guests can move through the circuit without queuing at the same point. A Vichy shower is the exception — it belongs with the treatment rooms, not in the circuit.

What does an experience shower need from the building?

Hot and cold supply at a stable, balanced pressure, a drain with proper falls sized on the grate rather than on the nominal pipe diameter, a dedicated electrical circuit for the control and lighting, and an accessible service void behind the wall. Everything sits inside a fully tanked wet-area build-up, so the wall construction, the waterproofing detail and the valve position have to be agreed before tiling — a concealed valve reachable only by breaking finished mosaic is the most common avoidable defect in this trade.

Which experience shower effects should a spa specify?

Choose them against the rooms either side. A shower following a sauna or hammam needs a warm rinse before anything cold; a shower feeding a plunge needs a cold mist or drench to bridge the temperature gap; a standalone recovery shower in a gym needs flow and pressure more than it needs chromotherapy. Every effect adds a flow, a pressure and a drainage requirement, so the specification has to be checked against the building’s capacity, not just the guest experience.

Does a Vichy shower need a special drain?

It needs a drain sized for a continuous flow rather than a burst, and it needs that drain to be reachable. A jet bar running for a whole treatment puts a steady volume onto the floor, so we prefer a linear channel under or beside the table, a short branch to the stack, falls formed in the screed rather than in the tile bed, and a trap that can be lifted from inside the room. Gravity drainage inside buildings is covered by EN 12056; the tanking beneath it by EN 14891 or ANSI A118.10.
