A private Finnish sauna in Lusail, Doha
Sauna Dekor designs, manufactures and installs saunas, hammams and spa rooms as a single turnkey package. We have done it since 1987 — this is our 40th year — and we have delivered in more than 35 countries. This project is a private villa in Lusail, Doha, Qatar, where we built a custom Finnish sauna with a full glass front, completed in 2025.
What was built
A single dry-heat cabin: wraparound tiered benches with backrests, concealed LED lighting run along the bench edges, a slatted guard around a floor-standing stone heater, a glazed front wall and door, and a digital control panel mounted outside the cabin next to the entrance. It is a one-room installation rather than a multi-room suite — the villa’s thermal programme here is the sauna alone.
The technical decisions behind it
Sizing a glass-fronted cabin
A glass front is the single most common reason a villa sauna underperforms. Our sizing rule is about 1 kW of heater output per cubic metre of insulated volume, plus roughly 1 kW per square metre of glazing. Glass has almost no thermal storage; it takes heat from the room and gives it straight back to the space outside, so the heater spends its life fighting a cold surface instead of holding a stable bench temperature. Getting that addition right is what separates a glass cabin that feels even from one that has a permanent cold edge near the door.
Glass detailing
The front is toughened safety glass on frameless hinges, set into a timber jamb with a compression seal. The glass is deliberately not tight to the floor: the small gap at the threshold is part of the ventilation path, not a tolerance error.
Ventilation
Supply low behind or beside the heater, extract low on the opposite wall, sized for roughly three to six air changes an hour in use. The cabin also runs a drying cycle after the session. Doha’s outdoor humidity is high for much of the year, which makes the post-session dry-down more important here than it is in a dry inland climate — a cabin that is never allowed to dry out will show it in the bench timber within a couple of seasons.
Heater and controls
A floor-standing stone heater with a slatted timber guard. The guard is not decoration; it fixes the clearance between bathers and the heater body, and it has to be dimensioned to the heater manufacturer’s own clearance table rather than to the joinery drawing. Control is external and digital, with a temperature limiter and a door contact, so the cabin can be brought up to temperature without opening it.
Lighting
LED is used as an indirect line under the bench noses and behind the backrest, with drivers outside the hot envelope. Fittings inside a sauna have to be rated for the cabin’s continuous operating temperature; the usual failure is not the LED itself but a driver quietly cooking inside the wall build-up.
Timber
Kiln-dried, low-resin species for linings and benches, fixed from below so no metal touches a seating surface. Cladding floats on battens with a vapour-tight layer and a ventilated cavity behind it, so the wall can dry in both directions.
What the site required
Villa thermal rooms in Doha are almost always retrofits into a completed house, and the constraint is nearly always the slab-to-slab height. Once the cabin ceiling, the ventilation path and the heater’s clearance zone are stacked up, the residual void is small, and the extract route has to be resolved inside it rather than by dropping the ceiling further. We prefabricate and dry-assemble the cabin in our Istanbul workshop, verify it against the surveyed opening, then number, dismantle and ship it, so the on-site phase inside a finished villa is assembly rather than fabrication.
